The Old Capitol was originally built in 1842 as the third capitol of the Iowa Territory; it later became the first capitol of the state of Iowa, and, in 1857, became the permanent home of the University of Iowa. Today, the capitol has become a "living museum", with each room painstakingly furnished with period furniture and antiques to invoke the feeling of the bygone era. The Old Capitol is located on the University of Iowa campus, near Mercy Hospital.
